Guest Column: Chatting About Chow

Guest columnist Stephanie Domina shares her passion for Reality TV Cooking Shows.
Enjoy!

Whether you are a foodie, a chef to be, or just a reality TV junkie at some point or another we all find ourselves in front of the TV wishing we could reach in and take a bite. Cooking shows are no new fad and they range from how-to’s to competitions, competitions happen to be my favorite.

Top Five Competitions:

Five:    Rachel vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook Off
The two hosts may have some of the most addicting (or to some people annoying) personalities in the cooking world. The term celebrity is quite loosely used since most of the “stars” are past their prime and many young viewers won’t recognize them. This show makes the list purely on entertainment value and watching food that anyone can make win a competition.

Four:    Worst Cooks In America
Bobby Flay vs. Anne Burrell? Well not exactly, they each have a handpicked team that will battle it out in the end. Anne is currently undefeated with wins in the past two seasons (I’m routing for Bobby). For those of us that need some helpful hints, every episode offers a tutorial on how to make a complete dish and a good laugh while we watching the contestants almost burn the kitchen down.

Three:  Hell’s Kitchen
Season 11 is in full swing on Fox this year and is everything you expect for the notorious show. If you can get past the yelling and aggressive behavior of the notorious Chef Ramsey the show can offer a great insight to the workings of a restaurant kitchen, so the next time you are waiting a little too long for you food, you will know the chef is sweating it much more than you are.

Two:    Chopped
Want a show that has a winner every episode? This one hour food network winner makes you think of food in a whole new way. This show is new every Sunday and combines time limits and crazy ingredients. You may just be surprised when almond cookie coated cod looks delicious.

One:    Top Chef
Season 10 of one of the most popular cooking competitions shows recently wrapped with the naming of the second female winner. The show first aired in 2006 and since then has only upped the ante in the caliber of chefs that compete. While most of us don’t know what a mirepoix (its diced vegetables) or even a gastrique (it’s a sauce made of caramelized sugar deglazed with vinegar) is, it’s the chef’s passion for what they do that makes the show compelling paired with the chefs and judges candid remarks that makes this show a must watch.

ABC Clips: N

Today is a clip for the letter N. This show was actually pretty funny and was directed by Fred Savage.

Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide

Tim's Best Bets: Monday

ABC Asks Viewers to Save "Happy Endings"

After ABC moved its low-rated by critically acclaimed series Happy Endings to Fridays, the network has finally decided to air commercials telling viewers to: Save Happy Endings. The commercials show clips from the back-to-back episodes that will air on Friday March 29th at 8 PM. The show is currently ranked as the network's lowest rated non-Friday comedy and has been on a hiatus for the last seven weeks. The campaign seems a little to late with most people guessing the show will not return for a 4th season.

Happy Endings premiered in April 2011 and features Casey Wilson (SNL), Eliza Coupe (Scrubs), Adam Pally (Californication), Zachary Knighton (Flash Forward), Damon Wayans Jr. (My Wife and Kids), and Elisha Cuthbert (24).

Tim's Top 10: The Best Middle Children

Below is a list I have compiled of the Top 10 Middle Children on TV over the years:

10. Cory Matthews Boy Meets World

Considering Cory Matthews was the title character of the show, it would be a shame if he didn't make it on the list. Though Cory's brother Eric got a majority of the funny lines, it was Cory's life we were seeing unfold each and every week.

9. Laura Winslow Family Matters

When Family Matters first aired there were three children: older brother Eddie, youngest sister Judy, and middle child Laura. Sadly, Judy was written out halfway through the series run. However, Laura's funny demeanor and having to put up with Steve Urkel 24/7 landed her at #9.

8. Theo Huxtable The Cosby Show

Cliff and Claire Huxtable had five children and Theo was the third born landing him right in the middle of the Huxtable clan and #8 on this list. Theo was the only son and had to deal with growing up with four sisters. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

7. Meg Griffin The Family Guy

Meg deals with a lot of crap on Family Guy. She is the butt of almost every joke and her whole family hates her. Watching how horrible her life is every week is quite entertaining and worthy of a #7 spot.

6. Jan Brady The Brady Bunch

Jan Brady has Marcia Brady for an older sister. It only made sense that she resented her so much and came up with the iconic line, "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia." To make matters worse, she had to wear glasses and braces while hiding in her beautiful sister's shadow. Making #6 on the list is probably the best thing that has ever happened to her.

5. Randy Taylor Home Improvement

Out of the three sons on the show, Randy was the only funny one. He was even able to hold his own against the very funny Tim Allen. Had he actually stayed on the show for the entire time, he may have scored higher on the list.

4. Stephanie Tanner Full House

Stephanie Tanner was probably the funniest character on Full House. When she wasn't driving through the kitchen in Joey's car or having Kimmy Gibler pierce her ears, she was able to come up with two memorable lines: "How Rude," and "Pin a Rose on Your Nose."

3. Sue Heck The Middle

Sue Heck is so weird she is funny. There is a high probability you will laugh out loud at least once because of something hilarious Sue did or said. Remember when she fell on the swing or tried out for cheerleading? Those are just two of the classic moments involving this middle child.

2. Lisa Simpson The Simpsons

The character of Lisa Simpson has been around for almost my entire life. In that time, she is proven she is smart, funny, and doesn't take any crap from brother Bart. She is the common sense for the entire city of Springfield. She deserves the #2 spot on this list.

1. Darlene Conner Roseanne

Darlene Conner is the best of the best for middle children on TV. She was a horrible sibling to Becky and DJ, but her sarcasm is the reason she tops this list. One of my favorite Darlene moments is when she asks brother DJ if he knows why she likes to swear. When he asks why, she lovingly tells him to, "Shut the Hell up."
