Happy Endings can't seem to find a home. The comedy has been on Wednesdays, Tuesdays, and even Sundays since 2011. That makes it hard to build an audience. It is even more difficult when the publicity is lacking so the audience cannot even find what day and time a show is on. In February, ABC announced that it will once again be moving the show. This time to Friday nights.
Any TV enthusiast knows that moving a show to Friday night means the network has lost all hope in the show and will most likely cancel it by season end. However, some shows like Supernatural and Fringe have done quite well on Friday nights. In the 90's, The X-Files was the top rated show and had a Friday night time slot. Even ABC's TGIF lineup was a must watch.
The problem with airing a show like Happy Endings on a Friday night is the target audience will not be at home to tune in. Endings is highly popular in the 18-34 demographic. Let's face it, people this age do not stay home on a Friday night. Zachary Knighton (Dave) has come up with a good idea, "Instead of going out and wasting your money at a bar, watch Happy Endings for free."
The rest of the cast is also less than thrilled that the network keeps shuffling them around. In February, Eliza Coupe (Jane) asserted, "It's a running joke when we film something incredible and someone goes, 'That was so good. It's too bad no one will ever see it.' I just wish we had more of a push [from ABC]."
A new slogan that would correlate with the target audience is: Pregame with Happy Endings every Friday night at 8 PM. Maybe they will build a stronger live viewing audience. Luckily, the DVR viewing numbers for Endings are decent. No matter if you watch it live or on DVR, Casey Wilson (Penny) is thankful to all viewers. She exclaimed, "If you are watching... God bless you."
